When asked to name Tucson’s most recognized architect, the first name that comes to most people’s minds is Josias Joesler. Joesler’s style has become synonymous with Tucson’s early 20th century development. His homes are valued by the community for their synthesis of vernacular and eclectic character. His public buildings, including churches and commercial spaces, are regional landmarks. Many of Joesler’s buildings are listed individually on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and a multiple property NRHP nomination is currently under development. Regional home and architecture magazines have celebrated and featured numerous cover stories of Joesler’s work. This book will present Joesler within the context of Tucson’s architectural and community development, and his legacy providing lessons for appropriate architecture in Tucson.
