Judith Chafee’s architecture provides an intellectual scaffolding and a tough-minded, independent practice model for the Arizona School of Architecture.   Her ruthlessly independent practice embraces geographic precedent, aesthetic research, and energy imperatives.  She became associated with dialogues in critical regionalism for a way of building that integrated principles of her modernist inflected education with pragmatic lessons abstracted from the landscapes of an Arizona childhood.   A close study of Judith Chafee’s early training and built work provides a unique understanding of making architecture that is both regional and far-reaching— an architecture that leverages limitations to stimulate an identity.

Christopher Domin is an architect and educator in the School of Architecture at the University of Arizona.  His scholarship on regional technology has focused on architectures of place in which the handling of light and related strategies for siting, structure, and materials are central. Professor Domin’s writing highlights the substantial influence of light and shadow in advanced regional practice, the adaptation of traditional or vernacular building strategies in the design process, and the integration of energy intelligence in the built landscape.  In his role as a Capstone thesis critic in the Metaphysics of Light research group, he has established himself as a dedicated teacher and mentor.
