Event Details

Founded in Tucson in 1945 by Erni Cabat and Norval Gill, the Cabat-Gill Advertising Agency helped shape how Arizona presented itself to the nation during the decades of extraordinary postwar growth. Through advertising, illustration, photography, typography, and graphic design, the firm created a compelling image of the Southwest as modern, prosperous, colorful, and distinctly different from anywhere else in America.

Cabat-Gill’s work promoted hotels, guest ranches, real estate developments, manufacturers, retailers, tourism organizations, and civic campaigns across Arizona. Their advertisements blended the visual language of modern design with imagery drawn from the desert, ranching, Mexican culture, Native American traditions, and the romance of the West. The result was a sophisticated regional style that could sell both a product and an idea of place.

The agency’s influence extended far beyond individual advertisements. Cabat-Gill helped define the visual identity of postwar Tucson and Phoenix at a time when both cities were rapidly expanding and reinventing themselves for a national audience. Their work demonstrates how commercial art can become cultural history, revealing the aspirations, myths, and contradictions embedded in the promotion of the modern Southwest.

This exhibition brings together advertising, publications, photographs, and archival material to examine Cabat-Gill’s creative legacy and the role graphic design played in shaping the image of Arizona in the twentieth century.
